almost -- The FIRST Day of Fall!

I say almost because Autumn doesn't officially begin until 11:09 pm ET! That's what Meredith from the Today Show reported anyway... :) 

Things have been a little sparse on this end because my Mother is in town! We've been hiking, to the beach, crafting, eating and having fun. We haven't documented many of these activities though. Whoops. I did catch Nala "helping" my Mom make some jewelry. :)

I've been working on another cute banner.... I can't reveal too much though because it's a present!

magnificent end tables

So as Barber often tells me, "it's hard to find a solid end table these days." (I kid you not, these words have left his mouth....

Anyhow, a few weeks ago during our frenzied apartment searching we were checking out a sub par complex near his school in Jacksonville. While touring the location in a gold cart with a lovely lady named Paris we had already telepathically communicated that this place was a "no go" when we happened past the trash bin.... and sitting right there needing a new home were these beauties (there are two of them).

Soooo.... after we had exited our golf cart tour we did what any smart, poor, graduate students furnishing two apartment would do and went back and got them! These babies are solid! We quickly decided that they would go with me (as we already have green end tables that match-ish Barber's guacamole green walls).

We primed and painted them salmon (NOT PINK) with red accents on the side slats.... I didn't take a picture before we had already moved and placed them in my tiny apartment making it impossible to get a view of both on either side of the bed in one shot.

 
 I promise they look good in proper lighting. If you're in the market... these guys will be for sale next year. :) Just sayin'.

diaper cake.

I know little to nothing about babies. Mostly I find them a bit scary. A few weeks ago I held a baby for ten minutes and that was longer than all the other babies I've held put together. Barber's lovely cousin Jill is expecting a scary cute little guy and family and friends threw her a baby shower last weekend. While I don't know much about babies I do know about crafts... so I made her a diaper cake.

I got the idea from my Mom's friend and I I figured I could probably find some directions floating around the internets. Sure enough there are a plethora of "baby diaper cake tutorials" available. Mine is a hybrid version of several different directions.

First I rolled the diapers and secured them with the little plastic hair ties that don't rip your hair. What size diapers you use (I used size one) will help determine how big your cake will be.

 

I think I used about 60 diapers total.... The amount you would need would depend on how large or small you'd like your cake. I decided on a 3 tiered cake.... For the base layer I put three circles of diapers around a bottle; the second layer you can see has two circles and the top has one (I secured each circle with stretchy string). I ended up stacking two baby bottles together because my cake was tall enough that it needed two.

After completing the structural part you can pretty much decorate it however you wish! Jill is having a boy so I went with a blue theme; we (Barber and I) also bought spoons, pacifiers and some teething toys that were on her registry and used them to "decorate" the cake.
